What is a Charcoal Starter Chimney?
A charcoal starter chimney is a fantastic little bit of kit, it gets the charcoals hot at an even temperature, which is difficult to do with just using lighters or lighting fluid on its own and it speeds the whole process up so there are no ‘hangry’ people waiting for their food.
When using a charcoal chimney starter you don’t need to use BBQ lighter fluid (which can lead to a bad taste in the food if not used correctly).
How to use a Charcoal Chimney Starter
Using a charcoal chimney is really straightforward.
- Roll up two sheets of newspaper and place in the bottom of the chimney.
- Fill the chimney with charcoal.
- Light the newspaper at the bottom.
- The heat from the burning paper pulls the hot air and flames up through the chimney. Just wait for the coals to start turning white.
- When ready, pour the hot coals into your BBQ.
What Charcoal Chimney Starter to buy?
There are a few chimney starters available.
We bought our personal charcoal starter from a garden center for £3, so you really don’t have to spend a lot on them. However, there are also the bigger brands to choose from, such as weber to name a few!
Charcoal chimney’s are quite large as they need to fill a BBQ with hot coals, so must be big enough to hold a good amount of charcoal. Obviously, for transportation purposes, this can be quite a cumbersome object and not necessary for a smaller portable BBQ, so there are also smaller chimney’s for those of you that require them for food on the move when camping or just having a hot picnic. Please remember these get VERY HOT, so take precaution with your hands and also be mindful of children and animals that may be in the same area.
